WRVO's Amy Cavalier spoke with Richard Beamish, publisher of "Adirondack Explorer," a bi-monthly publication based in Saranac Lake. Beamish explored the region's unique winter opportunities.

Oswego, NY – A number of environmental groups will be holding a forum at SUNY Oswego tonight exploring nuclear safety after September 11th.

One of those speaking will be Doctor Gordon Thompson, the executive director of the Institute for Resource and Security Studies and a professor at Clark University.

Thompson says one of the main safety concerns at the nation's nuclear plants is the practice of storing nuclear waste on site in large dry casks.

Oswego, NY – The State University of New York at Oswego will begin handing out potassium iodide, or KI, tablets to students today.

Taking the pills after a nuclear incident can help prevent thyroid cancer by absorbing certain kinds of radiation in the body.

The Oswego County Emergency Management office has been handing out KI tablets to residents living within 10 miles of the county's three nuclear reactors.

The college is just about 10 miles away from Nine Mile Point.

Cortland, NY – Smoke was visible for miles and miles after last night's fire at the Cortland County recycling plant.

The City of Cortland was blanketed in thick, malodorous smoke for much of the night.

Forty firefighters were called in to battle the blaze. One suffered a minor shoulder injury.

City officials are calling the fire one of the city worst.

About 50 tons of plastic and paper products burned.

Niagara Falls, NY – The Seneca Nation's new casino on the American side of Niagara Falls will be called the "Seneca Niagara Casino."

The Nation held a contest to name the new gaming facility. About 500 entries were made. The winner is a Seneca Nation member from the Alleghany territory. She gets a five day vacation in the Bahamas for her efforts.

The casino logo will feature a picture of the American falls.

New York – A suggestion made by a professor at The University of Buffalo's School of Pharmaceuticals to allow pharmacists to administer flu and pnemonia vaccinations is not new.
