Event Description

Stephen Venables, British mountaineer and author, will discuss his climbing career. In 1988, Venables became the first Briton to reach the summit of Mt. Everest without bottled oxygen. He traveled with an American team, climbing the mountain’s Kangshung Face, which had only been ascended once before. Venables has also climbed in locations such as Afghanistan and Antarctica, scaling some of the highest and most isolated peaks. Venables has authored and co-authored 12 books, including Everest, Kangshung Face and Himalaya Alpine-Style: The Most Challenging Routes on the Highest Peaks, the latter of which won the Banff Mountain Book Festival’s grand prize. Venables has previously served as a president of both the South Georgia Association and the Alpine Club. He currently travels around the world, climbing, skiing, and sharing his experiences. This event is sponsored by the History Department and the Outdoor Leadership Program at Hamilton College.
