Sofía Luz Pérez is a Mexican American artist born in Austin, Texas and raised in Central New York. Her work often depicts ancient feminine archetypes while referencing self-portraiture, bringing together the ancient wisdom of her pre-Colombian cultural heritage with her present-day self.
“My practice stems from an inner narrative that I’m working through. Much of my work has been inspired by the experience I’ve had with healing illness, and by the healing of generational family trauma. I address both the physical and nonphysical (spiritual) aspects of those processes. I began drawing self-portraits to document my process and progression in the aftermath of the diagnosis.”
“Since then, I usually depict a fusion of self-portraiture and images of empowerment with symbolism from my ancestral heritage. I often reference archetypes through the powerful goddess imagery from Aztec mythology. I began my exploration into my ancient indigenous heritage many years ago, and it has been a key component in my creative practice.”
"Ohero:kon - Under the Husk" is a 26-minute documentary following the journey of two Mohawk girls as they take part in their traditional passage rites to becoming Mohawk Women. Kaienkwinetha and Kasennakohe are childhood friends from traditional families living in the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne that straddles the U.S./Canada border. They both take part in a four-year adolescent passage of rites and ceremony called Ohero:kon "Under the Husk" that has been revived in their community. This ceremony challenges them spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It shapes the women they become. Q+A with director Katsitsionni Fox will follow the screening.

Celebrate Earth with Baltimore Woods Nature Center and learn the many ways you can connect with nature in 2024! Look for pollinators, use a microscope to see nature in a whole new way, become a bird in the migration obstacle challenge, be a citizen scientist, meet people from nature and conservation-based organizations around Central New York and learn how you can get involved. The international Earth Day theme for 2024 is Planet vs. Plastic. As part of our celebration this year, we’ll help you understand how plastic impacts our planet’s health, and how you can rethink your own use of plastics in your daily life. If all of the demonstrations, games, information stations, and hands-on activities still aren’t enough for you, come along on a guided bird or wildflower hike to see the spring life return. There are so many things you can do to keep nature a part of your life every day no matter where you are.
More details: The Earth Day Celebration is free for everyone, although space is limited. This program is designed for ages 3 and up. Pre-registration is required. Registration for hikes will be at the event check-in table on Saturday.
Please pre-register for the morning or afternoon, or both.
