Randy Wenner wins Regional Murrow Award

In November, we featured a story by Randy Wenner about a GE prototype from central New York that was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. for preservation. It was announced today by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) that Wenner won a 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award.

Recent NPR headlines defaced

Late Monday evening, several stories on the NPR website were defaced with headlines and text that said “Syrian Electronic Army Was Here.” Those stories were distributed to our website via NPR. We are working with NPR to make the necessary corrections. NPR continues to monitor the situation.

Take Care debuts this Sunday evening

WSUC Outage

There will be a short power interruption on the SUNY Cortland campus this morning. This will cause WSUC 90.5FM to be off the air starting at 7 a.m. We will remain off the air in the Cortland area until power is restored. The outage is not expected to be long-term.

On January 1, 2013, the WRVO Public Media program schedule will include the following changes:

The Campbell Conversations, WRVO's interview series hosted by Campbell Public Affairs Institute director and Maxwell School of Citizenship professor Grant Reeher, is moving from Saturdays at 4 p.m to Sunday evenings at 6 p.m.

We've got quite a few specials this year to get you into the Thanksgiving spirit.

Earth Eats | 10 a.m.

We'll kick off Thanksgiving Day with an hour long special from Earth Eats (a program about local food and sustainable eating that is normally heard each Saturday at 4:30 p.m). Earth Eats Thanksgiving is about real food and green living, a program of planning and preparing a terrific Thanksgiving meal with turkey, other courses, and some vegetarian options.

WRVO earns top honor at AP awards

WRVO received the lion's share of first-place awards this past weekend at the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association's annual news awards competition. For the second year in a row, WRVO received the NYSAPBA's Steve Flanders Award presented to the radio station with the largest number of first-place awards in the annual competition. WRVO News Director Catherine Loper and Innovation Trail reporter Ryan Delaney represented WRVO at the awards presentation.

Throughout the year we examine the WRVO Public Media program schedule. Using Arbitron data and other audience research we evaluate programs to assess their popularity and identify weaknesses that offer opportunities to refresh the schedule. Because the WRVO Public Media audience is continually evolving we have a responsibility to bring new programs into the mix to encourage listening among those new to public radio just as we continue to present long-time favorites.

Ken Rudin, NPR's 'Political Junkie,' at Syracuse Stage on Thursday, May 31st at 7PM. Tickets are $20 for main level open seating, $15 for open seating in the balcony level. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Every Wednesday, he can be heard on Talk of the Nation in the "Political Junkie" segment. In his "Political Junkie" blog on NPR.org, Rudin delves into campaign history, strategy and trivia, including the popular ScuttleButton contest.

Catherine J. Loper appointed Director of News and Public Affairs

WRVO Public Media has appointed Catherine J. Loper Director of News and Public Affairs. The appointment follows a 20-year career as broadcast reporter, senior producer, newsroom manager, and, most recently, Director of News for the Washington Bureau of the Fox News Channel. From 2007 to 2010 she was Director of White House Coverage for the network. She has held similar positions at Canadian Television Network, ABC NewsOne and APTN.
