Comptroller warns that state budget may have more holes

ALBANY, NY – The State Comptroller says the state budget is based on shaky fiscal assumptions, and warns of yet another mid year deficit if corrections aren't made. The more than three months late state budget is also causing some political fallout, as revealed in a new poll.

Jobless rate rises in CNY, but recovery is underway

SYRACUSE, NY – Unemployment rose in Central New York in June. Even so, there is some hopeful news in the numbers.

"We've started to see some over-the-year job growth," said Karen Knapic-Scalzo of the state Labor Department's Syracuse office.

The region's jobless rate for June stood at 7.8%, up from 7.6% the month before. A year ago, it was 8.4%.

Poll: Legislators get an "F", Paterson a "D" on state budget

ALBANY, NY – A new poll from the Siena College Research Institute flunks state legislators over their handling of the state budget.

Siena's poll found that three-quarters of those polled gave the Legislature either a "D" or an "F", with nearly half grading the Legislature at "F". Gov. Paterson fares better, with 51% giving him either "D" or "F". 20% graded his budget performance as meriting either an "A" or "B".

"Flunked em flat out," Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said of the grades given to legislators.

Iroquois lacrosse team remains stuck in passport flap

NEW YORK CITY – The Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team remained stuck in New York City Wednesday, as the governments of the United States, England and Canada tried to sort out a flap involving the team's passports.

The team, made up of lacrosse players from reserves in New York and Canada, intended to fly to Manchester, England for the World Lacrosse Championships, which begin Thursday.

"3 Men in a Room" returns with 2010 state budget negotiations

ALBANY, NY – State lawmakers could return to the Capitol this week to try to finish up the state budget. They've approved the spending bills, but need to complete a revenue budget that will pay for the spending.
