About John Weeks
John Weeks was born on August 21, 1924 on a little farm in West Webster, NY. His father was a commercial artist, his mother a writer and reciter of dialect essays. His early interest in nature was fostered by his parents, his 5 siblings and his teachers.

At Cornell he studied ornithology and wildlife management graduating in 1949 with a BS in Agriculture. Ten year later he obtained an MS from Syracuse University majoring in plant ecology.

His career included: Conservartion Biologist for the NYS Conservation Department, Associate Professor of Biology at Oswego State, Founding Director of The Rogers Environmental Education Center at Sherburne, NY and Director of Onondaga Nature Centers/Centers for Nature Education orignally headquartered at Beaver Lake.

During his years at Oswego he concentrated on the development of Rice Creek Field Station. While working for ONC/CNE he oversaw development of programming for Beaver Lake, Baltimore Woods and the Cayuga Nature Center.

After retiring in 1982 he designed and developed environmental exhibits and consulted with various education groups in NY State on designing and programming Nature Centers. He also assisted Cayuga County and the local citizens in the development of the Sterling Nature Center.

During that time he also wrote 1000 nature columns for CNY daily and weekly newspapers.  In 1982, with the assistance of the Rice Creek staff he initiated “The Nature of Things”  a weekly 5 minute radio spot produced and aired by WRVO.

He and his wife Esther were married in June of 1946. They have five children and 4 grandchildren.
