If the recently approved nuclear subsidies can save the FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Oswego County, it likely will not be with Entergy as its owner.
FitzPatrick spokeswoman Tammy Holden said Entergy is pleased with the New York Public Service Commission's (PSC) decision to subsidize the state's financially struggling nuclear power plants, but she said that did not change the company's mind about their earlier decision to close the plant. Entergy is in negotiations with Exelon, owner of the Nine Mile Point and Ginna nuclear plants in upstate, for the sale of FitzPatrick.
"Recognizing the fact that we want to provide certainty for employees and community working to aggressively come to a deal or agreement if possible," Holden said.
Holden said Entergy hopes to reach a deal with Exelon about FitzPatrick by mid-August. In the meantime, the plant is preparing for a potential shutdown or refueling next January. And Holden said the company has held a series of workshops and open houses with the representatives from other Entergy nuclear plants for the plant's employees. FitzPatrick supports 615 jobs, but since the announcement of its closure last fall, Holden said the employee headcount is down to 545.
According to Holden, though, Entergy does plan to continue operating its Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, which is located 24 miles outside of New York City.
Exelon could not be reached for comment.
