Local Reaction to Death of bin Laden

By WRVO news

Oswego, NY – Lots of people stayed up very late to hear the news of the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. counter-terrorism forces. Some of those people took to the streets.

On the SUNY Oswego campus, a large group of students gathered in a common area to hold a noisy early morning celebration. They sang the National Anthem and chanted "USA! USA!"

"The situation provides closure," said SUNY Oswego student Colby Nortz. "For me, this started on September 11, 2001, and here we are 10 years later. To the families of the victims, I'm so happy for them."

As for official reaction, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer weighed in overnight. In a statement, he said bin Laden's death was "a thunderous strike for justice" and noted that New York City's heart is still broken by the September 11th attacks.

He said bin Laden's death brings some closure to the families of the 9/11 victims.

Schumer called the military action a massive achievement, but no the end of the war against terrorism.
