NPR One: Public radio made personal

You can listen to hand-picked stories, based on what you like, with NPR One. It's public radio made personal.

NPR One delivers the news of the day, interesting stories, the issues facing residents of central and northern New York, podcasts and more. The difference between listening on the radio and listening with NPR One is that your listening is curated with NPR One. You can skip stories or like stories based on your interests and mood.

The best part is: you'll still get your favorite local content. Newscasts from the WRVO News team are uploaded daily, along with the latest in state politics, environmental issues, technological advancements, arts, government and more -- from our reporters. This regional coverage, mixed with national and international stories and podcasts is what makes NPR One so special.

NPR One is available on a number of platforms. Here's how to get started:

Listening on your smartphone or tablet

If you want to use the NPR One app on your smart phone or tablet, just download it from your app store (the same way you download Google Maps, Twitter or Facebook apps). This app is even available for Microsoft Windows devices. When you open the app for the first time, just push play! You'll get an overview of exactly what NPR One is.

After that, you may see our logo on the center of your screen. If you don't, just choose the option to "Set a different local station," and sign in using your email, Facebook or Google+ account. [NPR won't sell your information or make it available to any one else. We can use this information to keep track of how many of our listeners are enjoying NPR One -- it helps us make decisions for the future.]

There's even an Apple Watch-enabled app, so you can hear NPR One on-the-go.

That's it -- time to get listening!

Listening with Alexa-enabled Amazon devices

If you have an Amazon Echo or Dot and want to get Alexa on board, it takes just two easy steps to listen to NPR One throughout your home or office.

First, enable the NPR One skill. You can say "Alexa, enable NPR One," or you can use your Alexa app to search for NPR One in the skill store.

Second, get listening! Logging in to your NPR One account will allow you to listen right where you left off, without hearing duplicate stories. You can ask Alexa to rewind, fast-forward, skip a story, mark it as interesting or get more details.

Here are some ways to get Alexa started with NPR One:

  • "Alexa, play NPR One"
  • "Alexa, ask NPR One to play the latest news"
  • "Alexa, ask NPR One to recommend a podcast"
  • "Alexa, ask NPR One to play Take Care"

Listening on your TV with Google Chromecast

If you want to listen to NPR One the same way you watch Netflix or stream Pandora, you can use your Google Chromecast. Here are some quick and easy steps:

  1. Make sure you're connected to your home Wifi network (or a friend's, if you're visiting)
  2. Open your NPR One app on your smartphone or tablet
  3. Find the icon to stream to your Google Chromecast. It's the one that looks like a small TV with a Wifi-signal in the corner.
  4. Confirm that you'd like to stream NPR One via your Chromecast and enjoy!
