Republican Joe Carni (center) celebrates his Syracuse Common Council win with friends at a downtown restaurant.

The Syracuse Common Council is gaining something new because of Tuesday night's election results -- a Republican.

Joe Carni, who is 25 years old, beat Democrat incumbent Jake Barrett in the 1st District. It was a rematch of 2013, when Barrett edged out Carni by just 38 votes. This time two-term Councilor Barrett lost by over 200 votes.

Carni ran on multiple lines in addition to the Republican Party line, which Barrett said hurt him.

"If you took the Democrats and the Republicans, it was much closer. I won. But, the Carni family deserves a lot of congratulations," said Barrett.

Carni's father Ed carni was re-elected yesterday as Supreme Court justice for the region. Last night, the younger Carni thanked Barrett for his service to Syracuse's 1st District.

"It's really exciting. A lot of door knocking, a lot of going out and talking to people. And all of that sort of paid off. And I'm just really honored and humbled to get started doing this."

Carni's campaign emphasized constituent services.
