Syracuse City School District superintendent Sharon Contreras, who has led the district since 2011, has been hired as the superintendent of Guilford County Schools in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will take over that position in August.
According to the Greensboro News & Record, the Guilford County School Board voted unanimously to hire Contreras. She'll become the fourth, and first female superintendent of the district since the Greensboro city and Guilford County school systems merged in 1993. The district has about 70,000 students, compared to about 20,000 students in the Syracuse City School District.
"I am truly saddened to be leaving the Syracuse City School District," said Contreras in a statement provided by the district. "These past five years have been a wonderful experience and I am deeply proud of all that we’ve accomplished together. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside so many talented educators and community members to serve the students and families here in Syracuse."
Contreras will be paid $250,000 a year in her new position, according to the News & Record.
