Governor Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders have agreed to limit the use of tanning beds by teenagers.
The bill will ban children 16 years and under from going to tanning salons. Seventeen-year-olds will still be allowed to use tanning beds with written permission from their parents.
Blair Horner, with the American Cancer Society, says his group wanted a ban on tanning bed use by all minors due to links between early exposure to tanning beds and increased cases of skin cancer later in life. But he says the compromise measure will still save lives.
"We believe that this will have a big effect on helping to reduce the exposure levels and hopefully melanoma cases that we see on the rise with young people now," Horner said.
The agreement was part of a number of end of session deals reached as lawmaker prepare to leave the capitol for the summer on June 21.
