You can have your story heard this July when StoryCorps comes to Syracuse. In partnership with Syracuse Jewish Family Service (SJFS), StoryCorps will be conducting interviews from Sunday, July 16 to Tuesday, July 18 (there will be additional opportunities to have your stories heard after this time, as well).
StoryCorps is a regular part of "Morning Edition" each Friday, when you hear heartfelt and raw conversations between individuals connected in some way. A national non-profit project, StoryCorps' mission is to preserve and share humanity's stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.
If you think you have a story to tell, you can apply for an interview slot. Fifteen interviews will be conducted over the three day period, with 15 alternates also being selected (those interviews will be conducted after the initial taping days). The hope is to attract a diverse representation of community members and subjects from across Onondaga County. SJFS is bringing StoryCorps to the area as part of their 125th anniversary celebration and Campaign 125 Squared.
"The sharing of stories weaves relationships, and the fabric of individual, family, and community relationships are the heart of Syracuse Jewish Family Service's mission," said SJFS Director Judith Huober. "Our goals for our anniversary campaign are to create (or restore) community awareness of our agency's historic mission and to renew our capacity to use stories and shared narrative in healing and building wellbeing in central New York's Jewish and general communities."
After the interviews are recorded, SJFS plans to used what it has learned to help members of the community continue the story-gathering initiative by using the StoryCorps app.
