KNOXVILLE, NY – The standoff began at about 8 p-m in a home in Knoxboro. That's a hamlet not far from the city of Oneida.

Police say a man named Chris Paterson barricaded himself inside his garage with a gun.

Police were talking to Paterson to try to get him to come out.
There was gunfire.

Deputy Kurt Wyman suffered a single wound, while Paterson was shot several times, police said.

Wyman died of his injuries at a Utica hospital. Paterson is in critical condition.

A department spokesman tells the Utica Observer-Dispatch that Wyman was a four year veteran, and a former marine.

WKTV reports that Wyman's wife went into labor with their second child after hearing that he had been shot.

The audio of the press conference is now here. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol speaks first. Also speaking during the press conference is County Executive Anthony Picente and District Attorney Scott McNamara.
