This week: bipolar disorder, a nutrition update and more

A regular sleep schedule, medications and psychiatric treatment can help control bipolar disorder -- a condition marked by dramatic mood swings that dramatically impact one’s life.

Dr. Thomas Schwartz, vice chair of the psychiatry department at Upstate Medical University, said the hallmark of the disorder is a sustained period of elevated mood, energy and activity that can provoke impulsive and destructive behavior; followed by (or mixed with) a period of depression. In this week’s episode Dr. Schwartz talks about treatment for people with bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness.

Also this week: a nutrition update, plus the causes of and treatments for abnormal uterine bleeding.
