WRVO program changes coming in July

There are exciting changes coming to WRVO weekends this summer!

As you have probably heard, Garrison Keillor is retiring after many years as host of "A Prairie Home Companion," and WRVO will end its long association with the show. We will miss our visits to the “little town that time forgot,” and weekly “News from Lake Wobegon” updates. We wish Garrison a relaxing retirement, and hope to hear him again on public radio sometime soon. This summer we will also say goodbye to "The Splendid Table" and "Radiolab." While this will be disappointing news to some, it provides an opportunity to try some new things on WRVO.

We are excited to debut three new weekend programs:

  • "Live Wire!" with Luke Burbank will be heard each Saturday evening at 7, with a rebroadcast at 2 p.m. Sundays. "Live Wire!" is a one-hour variety show featuring music, comedy and interviews with contemporary thought leaders. It’s all recorded in front of a live audience.
  • "Freakonomics Radio" debuts at noon on Sundays. Based on their award-winning books and podcasts, "Freakonomics" is hosted by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner, who discuss and dissect common beliefs -- and misconceptions -- about everyday things. You may remember hearing the well-received "Freakonomics" limited radio series in the past on WRVO. We’re thrilled to bring Levitt’s and Dubner’s offbeat observations to listeners on a weekly basis.
  • NPR’s trivia quiz, "Ask Me Another" returns to WRVO Sundays at 3 p.m. Hosted by Ophira Eisenberg and recorded in front of a live audience, the show’s recent guests include Ellie Kemper ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt") and Patrick Stewart.
  • You’ll also hear some of your current favorites at new times:  the "TED Radio Hour" moves from 4 p.m. to 11 a.m. Sundays, along with an advance broadcast on Saturdays at 6 p.m., following "All Things Considered." "Studio 360" moves a couple hours later to 1 p.m. Sundays. And you’ll have another chance to try your hand at the weekly NPR news quiz, as "Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me" will be rebroadcast Sunday afternoons at 4 (the 11 a.m. Saturday broadcast of "Wait, Wait…" remains unchanged).

Confused? Here’s a look at the new WRVO weekend program schedule, effective July 2:

We’re also pleased to bring you season 2 of "Invisibilia," which will be heard at 10 a.m. Sundays for seven consecutive weeks, beginning July 3.

Change is sometimes difficult, but we hope you’ll give our new programs a chance. We’re looking forward to re-imagining our weekends with you! We would also appreciate your thoughts and comments, email us to share your opinion or to ask questions. As always, thank you for your continued support of WRVO Public Media!
