Area politicians weigh in on federal budget proposal

Apr 9, 2014

A small group, organized by the Onondaga County Democratic Committee, protested outside the Onondaga County Republican headquarters in Syracuse over Paul Ryan’s 2015 federal budget proposal. Area Democrats are upset about entitlement cuts while Republicans insist balancing the budget is a good idea.

About 12 people showed up to protest “Path to Prosperity,” the Republican budget that cuts about $5 trillion of federal spending over the next ten years.

Fort Drum is among the many arms of the federal government dealing with furloughs as a result of the government shutdown. Workers deemed non-essential were sent home midday yesterday.

A division spokeswoman said the timing is bad for the post, because because it comes on top of a nearly two-year hiring freeze that has many departments already down to bare bones staffing. And this is a busy time for Fort Drum, with multiple units preparing for imminent deployments, and others returning and going through reintegration.

With the federal budget sequestration deadline only days away, Syracuse-area Cong. Dan Maffei opened the phone lines for a telephone town hall meeting Tuesday night.  Callers were concerned about the how these funding cuts will impact central New York if sequestration goes into effect March 1.
