Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) is releasing details of a crowdsourcing survey he has taken of his constituents, to show what he says are too many "dead zones" for cell phones throughout the state.

Schumer says upstate NY residents have reported more than 4,000 cell phone dead zones scattered throughout upstate.

Schumer says this is happening despite the fact cell phone companies are reporting full coverage in some of these areas.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY)is enlisting help from New Yorkers in identifying areas around the state that have poor cell phone reception.

In a conference call, Schumer told reporters that some carriers are misleading residents with maps that promise coverage in certain areas when, in reality, they are "dead zones" that drop calls. That can leave consumers stuck in a contract they signed with a carrier unless they pay a penalty.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) wants to make it harder for phone hacking rings to rip off New York state businesses. Schumer is hearing from New Yorkers about dozens of businesses that are racking up huge phone bills because of these hackers.
