Nikki Haley, the governor of South Carolina, and other Republican lawmakers in the state are calling for the confederate flag to be removed from the state capitol. The decision was made after the recent tragedy in Charleston where nine people were killed in an apparently race-motivated shooting in an historic black church.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), speaking in Syracuse Monday, said a national conversation about the inspiration of the attack and the meaning of the confederate flag is needed.

There are a number of primary elections today for federal posts, including for Congress and the U.S. Senate, but turnout is expected to be very low.

Gillibrand Predicts FEMA Infusion

OSWEGO, NY (wrvo) - Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says a lot of senators were not there for Monday's failed effort to pass new funds for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist victims of natural disasters in New York and nationwide.

Senate Republicans blocked Democrats' move to quickly pass 7-billion dollars in additional funds for FEMA, which says it only has some $300 million left in its coffers. Damage estimates in New York State alone could exceed $1 billion.
