Many New Yorkers who live along the Erie Canal are rediscovering the waterway via long-distance bicycle trips.

The recreational trail along the canal is becoming a well-used resource by people living in towns that were built by the canal. And they’re spending money too.

A survey by Parks and Trails New York finds a million and a half people take to the Erie Canal Trail every year. A large majority, nearly 90 percent, of those are bikers.

Thousands of fishing fans are heading north to the St. Lawrence River this weekend for the Bassmasters Elite Series tournament, the top professional tour for bass anglers.

On Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo showed up to do some cheering of his own.

Waddington’s Whittaker Park has become a village of food and craft stands and tackle shops to accommodate the 10,000 Bassmasters fans expected this weekend.

The main stage is where the anglers weigh in their catch each afternoon at 3 p.m. And that’s where Cuomo took the stage, the championship trophy to his left.

While the heavy rains in central and northern New York caused flooding last week, the region's state parks, for the most part, are up and running.

That's good news with the busy Independence Day holiday weekend upon us.

While a handful of state parks in central New York were forced to close their gates last week when heavy rains caused flooding, state parks office spokesman Randy Simons says all but one site has reopened.

The site that's still closed is the boat launch on Canadarago Lake in Otsego County.
