Gene therapy presents potential treatments to disease

Medical researchers are putting a lot of resources into understanding genes as both the causes and solution to many diseases.

University of Rochester Medical Center professor of pediatrics Dr. David Dean studies the best way to treat diseases through gene therapy.

His laboratory recently received a  four-year, $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Dean explains one challenge facing researchers in his field.

The science behind being 'hangry'

Find yourself impatient and lashing out at people? The solution, according to a recent study, may be in the kitchen.

This week on Take Care, Dr. Brad Bushman talks about the concept of "hangry," or being more angry and aggressive when you're hungry. Bushman, a professor of communications and psychology at Ohio State University, recently conducted a study on the subject that involved 107 couples and found that participants with lower blood glucose levels more frequently showed signs of anger.

The science community was buzzing this week with news of a breakthrough in stem cell research. Stem cells have the potential to transform into any tissue in the body, and are being explored as treatment options for trauma and degenerative diseases.

When we’re born, our cells are programmed to carry out a specific role. They automatically become muscle cells, skin cells, nerve cells, and that role can’t be changed.

But stem cells can be manipulated to become any kind of cell, offering the potential for regeneration in the body.

University at Buffalo researchers are developing an underwater internet system. The wireless network aims to improve the detection of tsunamis and could potentially save lives. The deep-sea system integrates acoustic underwater networks with the Internet.

A network of acoustic sensors placed on the ocean floor collects data. That information is then sent up to a buoy on the surface, where it’s converted into radio waves.

Upstate Medical University's new Neuroscience Research Building is on the cusp of bringing brain researchers together at last. The $72 million building is an expansion at Upstate's Institute for Human Performance.

VIPs toured the block-long, five-story building this week. At this point it's a shell, full of empty labs and dark rooms. It's the $50 million worth of high tech equipment coming later this year that'll make a difference in brain research, according to Upstate's Vice President for Research Rosemary Rochford.

A Binghamton researcher is launching a study that he hopes will help with early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. David Shaffer is looking for Alzheimer’s patients so he can record their voices. Shaffer believes if he can get enough samples and enough funding, he could pinpoint how a deteriorating brain reveals itself in speech patterns, because so much of the brain is involved in speaking.
