Rural areas struggle with health care availability

Healthcare is readily accessible in urban areas and people living there have a lot of choices when it comes to the type of care they receive. That isn't the case for people living in rural communities. Dr. Alana Knudson is the program area director in the Public Health Department at NORC, an independent research institution at the University of Chicago, as well as the co-director of NORC’s Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis.

Knudson discusses the concerns rural communities might face when it comes to accessing healthcare in their area.

Volney gets federal funding to build new water main

The Oswego County town of Volney will receive about $2 million in federal grants and loans to help build new water lines for about 100 homes and get them on the public water system.

Town Supervisor Dennis Lockwood says right now those residents are using wells, which don't always provide the cleanest water.

The idea is to connect small communities with private money, in an effort to revitalize rural America.

Bringing broadband Internet access to rural central New York is on the list of items that Syracuse-area Rep. Dan Maffei says he would like to get done. Maffei, a Democrat, says the move to bring broadband to the area isn't just about having a faster connection to do Google searches, but building sustainable economic and informational growth.

Upstate social work programs are aiming to provide better rural services for veterans and their families. Universities from across upstate New York, including in Rochester, Buffalo, Albany and Syracuse, are taking part in a program funded by the Department of Health and Human Services to train students in remote areas.

Schumer fights for a provision to the farm bill
