The Onondaga County District Attorney’s office is investigating a case of possible embezzlement at the Central New York SPCA.

Former Onondaga County Executive Nick Pirro is the treasurer for the CNY SPCA Board of Directors. He went to the DA’s office July 11 with suspicions that something wasn’t right with the books.

"In the operation of being the treasurer, things were brought to my attention. Other things were on my radar screen, and putting them together, I felt it was necessary to have somebody with expertise look at it,” Pirro said, in an interview with WRVO News.

Onondaga County lawmakers approved a plan to put a dog kennel at the county jail in Jamesville, with the idea of helping inmates and stray dogs.

Stephanie Higgins of the Syracuse Pit Crew says the dog shelter will serve as an overflow facility for up to 25 dogs from the SPCA and Dewitt Animal Hospital. These are animals that would be otherwise euthanized.

The Central New York SPCA is bracing for an influx of cats. Officials estimate more than 200 cats and kittens will be dropped off at the center in the next two and a half months. Spring is the time of year cats begin breeding and this year’s early warm weather is causing animal shelters to prepare ahead of schedule.
