Protesters against hydrofracking, the controversial gas drilling process, followed President Barack Obama to Syracuse from his first stop in Buffalo on Thursday.

"Ban fracking now! Obama! Ban fracking now! Obama!"

The voices of about one hundred protesters were united in their opposition to hydrofracking. Julianne Skinner came from Montrose, Pa., an area where fracking is allowed.

"They [gas companies] didn't exercise caution," Skinner said. "They were in there, do it quick, do it dirty, get our money and let's go."

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle indicated she is still not conceding her race to represent central New York's 24th congressional district, despite trailing by about 4 percent to Democrat Dan Maffei.

The candidates in the 24th congressional district contest were prepared for the race to go down to the wire, since polls predicted that democrat Dan Maffei and Ann Marie Buerkle were locked in a statistical tie, with Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum trailing behind. But it looks like former Congressman Maffei will be returning to Washington to represent central New York in Congress.

After months of campaigning in the too-close-to-call 24th Congressional District race, it's almost time for voters to make their decision. The final weekend of the election season was a busy one.

Rozum runs first campaign ad

Ursula Rozum, Green Party candidate for Congress in the 24th congressional district, is beginning to run her first television campaign ad in the final days before the November 6 election.

The candidates running for the 24th congressional district seat offered three distinct choices for voters in the first televised debate featuring all three candidates last night.   The budget deficit,  jobs, and health care reform were major issues discussed in the WCNY studios, but the most pointed comments mirrored a dispute in the campaign over abortion and the definition of rape.

Two of three candidates in the race for the 24th congressional district, met with voters in Cayuga county yesterday during a town hall forum organized by one of those candidates, Republican Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle.

Democratic congressional hopeful Dan Maffei is calling on Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle to take a stand on hydrofracking.   At the same time, Maffei is reiterating his support for federal legislation that would regulate the practice.

Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum says she's been pressured to drop out of the race in the 24th Congressional district.  She won't say who's putting that pressure on her, but says she has the ability to take votes away from both major party candidates, Democratic challenger Dan Maffei, and incumbent Republican Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle.

Representative Ann Marie Buerkle has challenged her two competitors to participate in a series of four joint town hall meetings before the November 6 election.

Congressional races around the country are likely to heat up now that the House of Representatives and the Senate have recessed until after the election. In the Syracuse area, the re-match between Ann Marie Buerkle and Dan Maffei is statistically a tie, according to the latest poll.

Running in her first race for public office, Ursula Rozum is the Green Party candidate for Congress in New York's 24th district.  She's going up against the incumbent Republican Ann Marie Buerkle and Democratic challenger Dan Maffei.

While local governments, the state of New York, and the federal government continue to work to make the sale and possession of designer drugs like bath salts illegal, there's one politician who says this is the wrong way to deal with the crisis. The 24th congressional district Green Party candidate predicts the moves will all backfire.

The Green Party candidate for congress in central New York says a massive public works program can create jobs and improve the environment.

Ursula Rozum called for a “New-Deal”-like $10 trillion, 10-year program to fund clean building, energy and transportation programs.

She says it would create needed jobs.
