Triple-digit layoffs have again hit the century-old firearm maker Remington Arms, which employs over a thousand people in the Mohawk Valley.
State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney confirmed 126 layoffs at the plant yesterday on her Twitter feed. The news was first reported by WKTV in Utica. Calls to the company and a union representative from WRVO were not returned.
Tenney blasted Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the layoffs, and blamed the state's landmark gun control measure, the SAFE Act, which was passed in early 2013.
The Republican lawmaker told the Utica Observer-Dispatch she was informed by a factory representative the downsizing likely had to do a with scale down of work surrounding a recent product recall.
This is the second big layoff notice to hit the iconic factory. Earlier this year Remington's parent company let go more than a hundred people at the Ilion factory, sending the jobs to its new factory in Alabama.
Remington announced in February it was consolidating some of its gun lines down south.
The factory in Ilion employs about 1,300 people. It's the linchpin of the small community's economy.
