Gov. Cuomo today continued to slam the four Congressional Republicans from New York who voted for the GOP tax overhaul plan.
The big issue for Cuomo and leaders in other high tax states is that it eliminates the state and local income tax deduction. The House version keeps the deduction for property taxes, but caps it at $10,000.
While in Syracuse to promote a new after school program, Cuomo called the four GOP congressional representatives from New York who voted for tax overhaul plan “traitors,” accusing them of putting their own interests ahead of constituents.
“You are not supposed to be a Republican first, you are supposed to be a New Yorker first,” said Cuomo. “And this was not supposed to be you supporting political chits with party elders, so you moved up the party ranks.”
One of the four Republicans who voted for the bill was Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus). He defended his vote during a manufacturing roundtable discussion in Syracuse Monday, saying the good in the bill outweighs the bad.
“Number one is, the vast majority of my constituents will have lower taxes come January. Number two it’s going to unlock manufacturers and businesses potential, to not only stay here but to flourish,” Katko said.
Cuomo says the elimination of the state and local tax deductions will crush the state’s budget, and force higher taxes on more than three million New Yorkers.
