The newly-appointed secretary of defense will visit Fort Drum and Syracuse University's veterans institute early next week, WRVO has confirmed.

It will be Secretary Ash Carter's first domestic trip since taking over at the Pentagon, according to Stars and Stripes, which first reported the trip.

Exact details and times for the trip are still being worked out. Carter will be in Philadelphia and then upstate New York Monday and Tuesday. Carter will visit his old Philadelphia high school and then Fort Drum and Syracuse, according to the Defense Department.

Carter will be at Fort Drum Monday, according to a base official, and then Syracuse on Tuesday, a spokeswoman at the university said.

In Syracuse, Carter will host a roundtable discussion at the university's Institute on Veterans and Military Families, according to the Defense Department. The topic of the roundtable will be on transitioning military service members into civilian life. He'll then make remarks to students and take questions, the spokesperson said.

A Syracuse University official said more details on the trip will be released later this week.
