EPA Moves Hearing on Hydrofracking to Syracuse

By Jason Smith

Oswego, NY – The Environmental Protection Agency has moved a public hearing on hydrofracking set for Thursday from Binghamton to Syracuse.

The EPA estimated a crowd of 1,200 to show up, officials in Binghamton estimated a crowd of 8,000 and increased its cost estimate. The EPA then moved the hearing to Syracuse.

Hydrofracking is a hotly debated topic. Water, sand and chemicals are shot underground, then gas is captured as the rock below ground is fractured. Advocates against hydrofracking say it's bad for the environment, the oil and gas industry says it's safe.

There will be three hearings Thursday at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse, held at 8am, 1pm, and 6pm. It's free to attend, but you're asked to pre-register online. Click here to register. If you have already registered for the Binghamton hearing, you don't need to re-register.
