This week is “Law Enforcement Appreciation Week” in the city of Syracuse. A series of events are planned in honor of police officers and one in particular who was killed in the line of duty. Friday will mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Syracuse Police Investigator Wallie Howard. Howard worked in narcotics on a D.E.A. task force and was undercover on a special assignment when he lost his life. Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said they are asking the city to join in a moment of silence on Friday at 2:24 pm.
“I think it’s right that we collectively give pause for that day and pay attention to the ultimate sacrifice that Wallie made,” Fowler said.
Fowler said this has been a challenging year for law enforcement across the country in terms of public perception.
“It calls for individuals to leave the safety of their own homes and to come out into the community and to place themselves in harm’s way, each and every day without hesitation, over and over and over again," Fowler said. "That’s what the job calls for. That’s what the commitment calls for.”
Events throughout the week include a photography display at the Public Safety Building, a demonstration of safely installing child car seats on Wednesday, and a remembrance of Wallie Howard at Forman Park on Friday. Police will be handing out blue ribbons and residents are encouraged to turn their porch lights blue to show appreciation.
