New York Indian Tax Dispute

By Chris Ulanowski

Onondaga Nation , USA –
The Pataki administration's Tax Department has issued new proposed regulations to meet a State Legislature imposed deadline of December 1st to collect millions of dollars on cigarettes and gasoline sold to non-indians on sovereign Native American land. All six nations that comprise the Iroquois Confederacy of "Haudenosaunee" in New York are opposed. WRVO's Chris Ulanowski asked attorney Joseph Heath, who represents the Onondaga Nation south of Syracuse, N.Y., to explain the native american response to the proposal, which is intended to resolve the decades-old problem.
