Peace is the word on the Syracuse University campus Monday and Tuesday. Promoters say the first-of-its-kind event in Syracuse, which includes the Dalai Lama, will spread the message through words and music.
Promoters are calling it historic; the two day schedule that features panel discussions, a public talk by the Dalai Lama and a festival-style concert in the Carrier Dome.
World Harmony Productions is producing the event, and spokesman Mark Emery says the message is simple. "There's a lot of tensions in the world, and a lot of animosity and this is trying to get people to come together to have a better understanding, to reach some common ground so the world is a safer and more harmonious place," said Emery.
His Holiness, the Dalai Lama is the headliner of the two-day event. The spiritual leader of Tibet will lead academic panels with his message of peace, non-violence, and interreligious understanding. He will also kick off the One World concert Tuesday evening , that will feature artists like the Dave Matthews Band, the Counting Crows, Natasha Bedingfield and emcee Whoopi Goldberg.
SU says it is expecting 1500 people to attend each of the panel discussions, with 24,000 jamming the Carrier Dome for the concert. The two panel discussions will be webcast and the concert will be recorded for possible later broadcast. The event is the brainchild of SU Trustee Sam Nappi, who established World Harmony Productions.
